A textile curtain that generates electricity? A mudguard produced by a knitting machine?

The topics and applications for smart textiles are many – and the number is rising:

  • Mechanical engineering
  • Medicine

The SmartTex network currently has the following R&D projects

Sensors and actuators

Electromagnetic fields play an important role in modern medical treatments, in the high-quality wellness sector and in technical applications. So we in our network are also concerned with the latest findings from both development and use.

Actuators

Light-conductive clothing and other products and textiles close to the body (car headliners, carpets) can be used to transmit special electrical signals (to improve your health or relieve pain, for example).

In the technical sector, there are also opportunities to use flexible electromagnetic systems to control processes.

Sensors

With the aid of textiles with conductive surfaces, information and signals can be sent to various client systems for evaluation. In this way, movement, pressure, nearness, bio signals, switching functions and environmental data can be measured.

The potential in these areas is infinite and has by no means been exhausted.

Smart fibres

Special properties in fibres can be used to release medicinal substances over precisely defined periods. The development of “container systems” is one of the topics addressed by the SmartTex network, as are also the possibilities for functionalising textile fibre materials by use of a variety of surface modifications or fibre materials that contain the smart functions within them.

  • Coatings
  • Surface modifications
  • Functional fibres

Smart textiles

Actively and passively cooling products are increasingly gaining in importance. Mobile cooling systems, particularly in the fields of medicine and clothing, are one of the new areas for functionalised textiles to be applied in.
