ESSENSE – Energy-Efficient, Self-Sustaining Wireless Sensor Systems

Sensors form the basis of modern industrial, building and IoT applications. However, with the ever-increasing number of networked sensor nodes, their power supply is becoming a key challenge.

The ESSENSE project is therefore developing a self-sufficient sensor platform that reliably powers itself by utilising various ambient energy sources. This presentation provides an insight into the development of a multi-source energy harvester based on micro-solar cells and triboelectric motion energy generators, as well as into energy management as a key component of the platform.

iSuits – smart clothing that thinks for itself

iSuits, a smart tracksuit, demonstrates how modern sensor technology and artificial intelligence can support the analysis of movement sequences. Integrated accelerometers record the movement sequence, whilst an AI model analyses the data in real time and assesses whether the movement is being performed correctly. The presentation introduces the solution developed as part of a collaboration between ITP GmbH and iSuits GmbH and highlights its potential for health, ergonomics, rehabilitation and sport.

Smart reversible fastening systems

Modern fastening technology offers an intelligent and sustainable alternative to conventional mechanical and adhesive-based fastenings. It enables clean, flexible solutions, such as the fastening of headliners and floor mats, and ensures a reliable hold. Their invisible integration complements an elegant interior design whilst simultaneously improving assembly efficiency and recycling potential. Looking to the future, future generations of reversible fastening systems may incorporate integrated sensor functions that digitally confirm correct installation and functionality. Such intelligent feedback mechanisms could improve quality assurance, support predictive maintenance and further strengthen user confidence.

This presentation traces the journey from the earliest pioneering steps to the high-tech applications of the future. Find out how the development – from the original Elitex® product, through imbut GmbH’s successful hiTex yarn, to the latest innovation, Ekitel – has shaped the industry, and what practical opportunities this opens up.

The circular economy – the end of the market economy as we know it?

Can a market economy geared towards consumption, growth and ever-increasing sales volumes really facilitate a genuine circular economy? This presentation examines this question using the textile industry as an example – an industry characterised, more than almost any other, by global supply chains, short product life cycles and complex material structures. The circular economy means far more than just recycling: it requires durable products, new business models, the consistent reuse of resources and a fundamental reassessment of value creation. Technical textiles, in particular, pose a special challenge due to high functional requirements, composite materials and demanding recycling processes. The presentation discusses the opportunities and limitations of a circular transformation and highlights the changes required of companies, markets and the political framework. The focus is on the question of whether, in future, the decisive factor for success will be not maximum sales volume, but the long-term preservation of value in products, materials and resources.

DigiPop – Supporting pelvic floor health with smart textiles

The DigiPop project is a cross-border collaboration with the Czech Republic. Its aim is to specifically improve women’s pelvic floor health.
To protect against various health conditions in later life, preventative strengthening of the pelvic floor is essential. Performing these exercises correctly is complicated and requires supervision by trained staff. The DigiPop project aims to address this issue with a smart textile. To this end, the pelvic floor area is fitted with sensors that monitor movements and muscle contractions, thereby enabling the exercises to be performed independently.

n4Sustain – Innovative learning methodologies to foster sustainability through digital tools and an entrepreneurial mindset amongst T&C employees

This presentation will introduce the Erasmus+ project ‘IN4SUSTAIN’. The project focuses on the development and combination of digital and analogue learning formats, OER content and gamified methods for teaching sustainability topics in the textile and clothing sector. This EU-wide project is being developed and piloted in Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Portugal and Spain. A wide range of stakeholders can be involved, from vocational training institutions and schools to SMEs and clusters, right through to large companies. The work is based on a roadmap for innovative learning methods, a handbook for trainers and a gamified learning platform featuring modules on various sustainability topics such as the circular economy, materials, communication and consumer engagement. With the help of these resources, knowledge can be integrated into initial and continuing vocational training in a practical way.
