Artificial intelligence as a link between smart textiles and digitalisation

Smart textile products today enable the measurement of various parameters on humans and in our micro and macro environment. The data is collected and wirelessly transmitted to remote IoT systems, analysed and feedback triggered for information or safety purposes. The processing of the data is done behind the scenes by invisible IT systems that work with artificial intelligence methods. These are developing ever faster in the direction of human-friendly and comprehensible systems. How AI methods can also improve smart textiles and our digitalisation processes was presented and discussed in practice-oriented presentations on 6 December 2023. As soon as the lecture scripts have been released by the speakers, we will make them available to you here as a PDF.

Innovation strategies and AI-based success stories across all areas of the company

Stephan Gasterstädt - AI-UI GmbH, Ilmenau

This presentation takes a look at the impressive applications of artificial intelligence in business and industry. Find out how AI technologies help to recognise errors in production processes and thus increase quality. We delve into the world of smart bonded joints and show how sensor data analysis leads to more efficient production processes. We also look at the role of AI in customer communication, from advanced chatbots to sentiment analysis that enables companies to take customer feedback to a new level. Discover how these real-world examples are revolutionising the business landscape and unlocking the full potential of AI.

Smart textiles as a data acquisition medium

Daniela Zavec, ITP GmbH, Weimar

The smart textiles we know today are able to measure a variety of data about a person or their immediate and wider surroundings. They can also act as motion sensors, distance sensors or pressure sensors and recognise other positive or negative influences. Based on our extensive development and design experience, we believe that such components can be a very important strategic link in the field of artificial intelligence and smart textiles. Our business areas combine the components that bring us success in data analysis. Various sensors are presented and future development directions are outlined.

Artificial intelligence in peripheral, textile-based brain-computer interfaces

Marius Neugschwender - noxon GmbH, München

New manufacturing methods now allow the integration of sensor arrays with a high number of electrodes into textiles. Improved electronics and system-on-a-chip technologies combine these methods with higher sampling rates and more precise resolution, and even portable AI models for online classification.

This presentation begins with a simple description of the human motion system and gradually adds more complexity to the sensors and evaluation software, culminating in a discussion of state-of-the-art technologies for peripheral brain-computer interfaces with an outlook on future developments

Areas in textile industries we can use AI

(Lecture will be held in English)

Sergej Zlahtic - TRONOG d.o.o. Slowenien

Sometimes AI changes the game for businesses, other times, not so much. We'll look at when money/research in AI doesn't lead to the results we want or causes trouble or even ethnical questions. We'll also discuss times when AI truly makes things better. Plus, we'll chat about times when companies say they use AI to get attention or investors money.

Integration of smart materials in textiles - prospects for intelligent data evaluation and control

Sebastian Gratz-Kelly - Lehrstuhl für Intelligente Materialsysteme, Zentrum für Mechatronik und Automatisierungstechnik, ZeMA gGmbH, Saarbrücken.

The use and integration of intelligent materials for the further development of smart textiles opens up new application possibilities. Smart materials offer the perfect symbiosis partner for smart textiles thanks to their versatility and flexibility as well as their sensory and actuator properties. Multifunctional elements can be developed by simultaneously utilising the actuator and sensory properties of dielectric elastomers (DE), for example. The elements make it possible to recognise a user's movements or inputs and generate haptic and acoustic feedback. By using AI-controlled readout and control of the multifunctional elements, user interaction can be further improved and the range of functions increased.

Artificial intelligence as a solution to the returns madness

Frederik Dürr - mySHOEFITTER GmbH, Hamm

Size-related returns are a huge problem in shoe e-commerce. Not only do they cost online shops billions of euros, but customers are also unhappy with an average of 30 minutes spent per return and a suboptimal customer experience. Furthermore, each return has a negative impact on the environment with 500g of CO2 emissions and a lot of packaging waste.

In cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute, we have developed artificial intelligence to minimise precisely this problem of size-related shoe returns. With a browser-based digital size advice system, we can use a photo of the customer's foot to measure the foot with millimetre precision with the help of our AI and suggest the perfect shoe size based on the inner shoe measurements. This minimises returns, optimises the customer experience and maximises sustainability.

14:30 Textile integrated sensor analysis for biometric data collection and processing - human digital twin in reality

(Lecture will be held in English)

Tajbeed Chowdhury - Lehrstuhl für Intelligente Materialsysteme, Zentrum für Mechatronik und Automatisierungstechnik, ZeMA gGmbH, Saarbrücken

Smart materials and integrated textile sensors in combination is an emerging technology for collecting human centric data. The biometric data collected through this technology allows for a state-of-the-art accuracy and real-time metric value. Moreover, introducing artificial intelligence to create a deep learning model or reinforcement network based on the body metrics open the door towards more complex applications such as Human Digital Twin (HDT). A demonstration of sensor analysis to model creation for the development purpose of preliminary HDT is presented.
