It is clear to everyone that we are facing major challenges. It was all the more exciting to learn about new smart solutions that have been developed in institutes and companies at this Smart Textiles workshop. The participants were able to get to know outstanding projects and many took the opportunity to discuss the stumbling blocks in implementation and the possibilities for their own projects with the experts.

The consumption of textiles has a significant impact on our environment. According to the EU Commission, the textile sector is the fourth strongest environmental and climate factor. The EU therefore published its textile strategy on 30 March 2022 to make textiles more environmentally friendly, durable, repairable and recyclable by 2030. The EU therefore wants to start with the design of textiles and introduce minimum requirements for environmentally sound design, which are to be set out in the proposed Ecodesign Regulation

Performance Textiles – Designed for Disassembling

High performance and functionality very often require hybrid material compositions. In most cases, these prevent a separation by type and thus the required circularity. In addition to the aspects of these hybrid but not sustainable all-rounders, Climatex shows a way of making hybrid textiles separable by means of the "textile screw" and thus circular, i.e. "ready for disassembling". As a profitable side effect and sales-promoting measure, performance and functionality can be trimmed to unimagined heights.

With a greener motive, the project Convert2Green promotes an open innovation ecosystem to accelerate adoption of novel circular and carbon-neutral materials and processes in a key European value chain: Smart Health through Smart Textile solutions.

Textile-based plant support system for vertical farming

Within a joint project of partners from the textile sector and a horticultural company, textile solutions for vertical greening of indoor and outdoor areas were sought. The regulation of growth conditions for plants can generally be achieved through the sensory acquisition of measurement data. The development of suitable surfaces revealed the complexity of the topic. Smart textiles can make a contribution here, but only solve part of the problem. The development results are presented and approaches for increasing the depth of integration are shown.

After the initial treatment of stroke patients in clinics and rehabilitation centres, further training at home is essential for the best possible recovery. Sensor technology that monitors the movement exercises must be integrated into textiles that can be easily put on and taken off by movement-impaired patients and is tight-fitting to guarantee stable sensor positions. The sensor technology (position, movement, posture, EMG, gait analysis) within the elastic textiles requires stable stretchable signal lines and sensor-related electronics. The construction and connection technology is presented with different solution concepts.

The use of electrochromic modules in the area of Ambient Assisted Living

Dr. Gulnara Konkin - TITK Thüringisches Institut für Textil- und Kunststoff-Forschung e. V.

A flexible, electrochromic display has been developed at the TITK that warns visually through a change in colour when the state of health of patients or people in need of care deteriorates. The display reacts to typical changes in bodily functions, such as a change in skin moisture, an increase in blood sugar levels or body temperature, etc. These changes are detected by appropriate sensors. These changes are recorded and evaluated by means of corresponding sensor technology. Voltage potentials derived from this lead to a colour change when applied to the display and thus trigger the warning. The developed system is an alternative to conventional alarm systems. It has the advantage that it is not frightening by bright warning lights or even loud acoustic signals, but has been adapted to individual needs as well as to a wide range of customers, including children and elderly patients. The alarm system is particularly advantageous when it is necessary to be inconspicuous to others as well as discreet.

Emotional closeness - how smart textiles can connect people

The development of a smart textile that can create emotional closeness to relatives, acquaintances and friends was the focus of the interdisciplinary research team. The starting point is the thesis that by using a smart textile interface, relationships at a distance can be better maintained and this has a positive effect on the general well-being of the participants. The aim of the project is to develop a communicative, interactive textile interface until it is ready for prototyping and to determine its functionality and effect in a field test.
